Seasonal Gutter Cleaning: Why Clean Gutters Matter Most in the Spring and Fall

Clean Gutters can help protect your property from water-related damage. During seasons of higher rainfall, typically spring and fall, using gutter cleaning services to prevent clogs can be critical.

Gutter cleaning is one of those chores that nearly every homeowner has on their to-do list. But the unappealing task of climbing up a ladder to scoop leaves, debris, and sludge out of your Gutters is also one of those home maintenance projects that never seems to get crossed off the list. It’s important to not ignore this job forever, though. Especially in the spring and fall, gutter cleaning can make a major difference in keeping your home safe from water damage.

In many climates around the country, and certainly here in northern Texas, spring and fall are the seasons of heaviest rainfall. It’s during these times that our Gutters are most relied on to redirect rainwater away from our homes and structures. And if your Gutters are clogged up, they simply won’t be able to meet the high demand. That’s where you run into problems with overflowing Gutters and all the negative consequences that can create. If you’re concerned about landscape erosion, wood rot, and even foundation damage, making sure your Gutters are cleaned this spring and again in the fall is the easiest way to secure peace of mind.

Why Gutters Matter

Now, you may be asking yourself, “How can those little troughs protect my house that much?” It’s certainly understandable to wonder how such a small part of your home’s exterior can make such a big difference in your whole house’s condition. What do those aluminum or steel channels really do? The answer is actually quite simple: They manage the water flowing off your roof and keep it from ending up too near your home. When your Gutters are working properly, they collect all the water that is running off the entire surface area of your roof (which, in heavy storms, can be a surprising volume), and then they redirect it away from your structure via the downspouts. When your Gutters are blocked up, all the water that falls on your roof ends up splashing down right next to your home. Beyond the obvious issues of unattractive mud splatters on your Siding, brick, or stucco, the end result is also a lot of water pouring into the ground awfully close to your house. As mentioned, the consequences can be pretty major: foundation cracks, water in your basement, rotting wood…

Gutter Cleaning

The good news is that preventing this type of property damage is extremely simple. Just don’t skip over “clean Gutters” when you’re working on your to-do list. Gutter cleaning is simple enough for homeowners who are comfortable spending a few hours atop a ladder, but there’s also no shame in calling in the professionals. Gutter cleaning services are available from professional companies if you’d rather not perch on a ladder for hours, or if you would prefer to stay far away from the sloppy goop of leaves and twigs that needs to be removed from your Gutters. To make certain your Gutters are completely cleaned, whether you’re doing the job yourself or leaving it in the hands of a gutter contractor, ensure the downspouts are also cleared of obstructions. (A quick blast from your garden hose is great for this.)

So if you, like so many homeowners, have been procrastinating on cleaning out your Gutters this year, now that fall is here, it’s time to get a move on this project. To keep your home safe, spring and fall are the two times a year you can’t pass on gutter cleaning.
